Deeceman's Action Figure Review
8/1/99

In this column, I've decided to cover another extremely popular episode I character, the Dark Lord of the Sith, Mr. Darth Maul. Instead of doing a review of each of his figures separately, I'll be covering the wave 1,6 and the figure that comes with the Sith Speeder.

Release: Wave 1 and speeder figure - 5/99, Wave 6 - 7/99
Price: Wave 1,6 - $6.74 each, Speeder - $12.99
Collection: 1
Wave: 1, 6, NA
Accessory: Wave 1 figure comes with a double-bladed lightsaber, Wave 6 comes with a single-bladed lightsaber and hooded cloak, and the Speeder figure comes with the double-bladed lightsaber and a soft cloth hooded cloak (and the speeder for that matter).

Detailing:
: Out of the three Darth Maul figures the one that gets his face the closest is the one that comes with the speeder. In my opinion, none of the 3-3/4 inch figures gets Darth Maul's menacing stare right and the wave 1 version looks downright goofy. I also believe that the sculptors are still struggling to get a cape right in hard plastic. In that sense, the speeder Maul scores again with the soft cloth hooded cape. According to pictures from various toy fairs, the next Maul figure will have a hard plastic upper cape with a soft cloth "skirt". Anything for a buck I tell ya. I'm very impressed that they were able to get the eyes right though on such a small figure.

Pose: Bottom line is, none of these figures allow a kid to get Maul into his signature pose. You can come close but no cigar.

Pros: Which figure did you run for when the stores opened their doors? Darth Maul. That's proof in the pudding right there. He is the coolest figure that Hasbro has put out yet and had collectors cleaning the shelves as soon as he was put out. In the Detroit area, only now are the wave 1 Mauls starting to be seen on shelves again and it is virtually impossible to find the wave 6 Maul unless you happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Cons:The pose is a bit weak and the facial detail could've used a bit more snarl.

I would like any and all comments about my review or the Episode 1 Yoda figure.
Also let me know of any figures you would like reviewed.
